Spring 2019 Session Information

The GCC spring session will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes the following:

  • Technical demonstrations

  • Science experiments

  • Separate sessions for middle and high school

Sisters in Engineering, Science, and Medicine Presents: 2018 Pathways to STEM Conference

Girls attending our conference will:

  • Become aware of the wide variety of STEM career opportunities and pathways
  • Engage in hands-on workshops and activities
  • Gain a new enthusiasm for STEM
  • Explore and interact with STEM organizations during the mid-day vendor fair
  • Learn the importance of taking classes in science, math and technology in middle school and high school
  • College Chat with Spelman, GA Tech, & UGA STEM Students (High-School only)
  • Participate in small group(1:10) mentoring session with female industry role models
  • Gain knowledge and understanding why STEM is important in the 21st Century

WORKSHOPS

 Pre-Workshop: College Chat with Female STEM Students from Spelman, GA Tech, & UGA

Workshop 1 (Robotics and Coding): This workshop will introduce participants to coding, robotics, and technology. This experience will help to build the student's confidence as the presenter demonstrates the coding language used to control the robot and discuss the technology behind the robot in a way they can relate to. Humanoid Robotics covers topics spanning many disciplines. The demonstration will spark the imaginations of students by exposing them to a great example of the application.

Workshop 2 (STEM Leadership and Mentoring): Formal mentoring session will occur during the lunch hour. Students will be partnered with adult mentors who are actively engaged in a STEM field.  During the session students will learn about different STEM fields and will develop a mentoring action plan:

Workshop 3 (21St Century Public Health and Medicine):  This workshop will gain understanding of emerging opportunities in public health, healthcare, and population health improvement from a physician who has over 25 years of medical experience.  With so many medical careers available, students have plenty to pursue: nurse, doctor, surgeon, physical therapist, massage therapist, nutritionist, dentist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, athletic trainer – and those are just a few!

VOICES of EBOLA: (CDC Field Trip)

EVENT DATE:   Thursday, 03/22/2018 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Join us on a special tour of the Ebola: People + Public Health + Political Will exhibit to hear the personal stories of the CDC and Public Health Service Responders who deployed to Africa during the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic. Responders will be stationed at different points throughout the tour to share their personal stories from the epidemic.

Pathways to STEM Careers

This symposium is geared towards raising awareness of STEM career opportunities and pathways for minority women who have an interest in STEM. Three keynote speakers for science, engineering, and medicine will be invited to speak. Lastly, students, educators from K-12, higher educational institutions, community organizations, and corporate leaders will be invited to participate and lead in discussions about STEM education and careers for the 21st Century. 

This symposium is FREE and geared towards increasing the participation, retention and advancement of minority girls in science, technology, engineering and math.
